University of Richmond

The Department of Modern Literatures and Cultures’ Japanese studies program provides a truly unique learning experience. By offering a strong contrast to European languages, perspectives and cultures, Japanese challenges the learner with new forms of written expression, different but regular grammar and access to key cultural information within the language's structure itself.

The ultimate goal of the program is to gain a deep understanding of Japanese culture through language. A holistic approach to linguistic fundamentals in the first two years provides a stimulating, challenging and fast-paced environment that leads to broad cultural studies in the upper-division courses.

There is a common perception that the Japanese language is difficult. However, Richmond's program emphasizes Japanese as a regular, systematic language whose structures and concepts carry over from one level to the next, building student confidence and competencies. Classes emphasize problem-solving skills as well as the general movement from recognizing characters and patterns to broader linguistic and cultural concepts.

Special opportunities include participating in semester and summer study abroad.
